EXCLUSIVE: Stevie Matthew on Collaborating with Robin Thicke for New Single “Hotel”

Listeners may remember Stevie Matthew’s debut as a solo artist last year when he released “a song to make out to” with Olivia Holt. Now, the up-and-coming producer is back with new music as he recently shared a brand new single, “Hotel,” a collaboration with Robin Thicke. With only two releases thus far and increasing support from listeners, it’s clear that this is only the beginning for the young star. “Hotel” gives fans a preview of more collaborations they can expect to hear soon from Matthew and other notable artists while he gears up to release his debut studio album. In an exclusive interview with CelebMix, Stevie Matthew opens up about “Hotel,” upcoming collaborations, and more.

What can you tell us about your brand new single “Hotel” and the inspiration behind it?

“Hotel” was so fun to make. I wrote it at my studio in Los Angeles with two of my favorite writers, Tony Ferrari and Dewain Whitmore Jr. Making this album for myself as an artist has been very different than producing for other artists. For the first time, there’s this almost limitless-ness to where I can let my brain go in the art. Some songs are really emotional about my life and love, and others, like “Hotel,” are just a vibe. This song was a chance to pretend that I was alive in 2002, and make something like a lot of the albums I grew up studying and loving. Hugely inspired by Robin Thicke’s ‘Something Else’ and Justin Timberlake’s ‘The 20/20 Experience.’

You teamed up with Robin Thicke for this track! What was it like to work with him?

A dream. He’s an absolute genius. It was really the beginning of something special too. We made this song in November of 2023 and since then he’s become such a special part of my life as a big brother and mentor. We’ve been in the studio a ton making the coolest stuff I’ve ever made.

Is there anything special you learned from this collaboration process that stands out to you?

I learn so much from Rob every time I see him about music, songwriting, production – but also about life and love. It’s endless.

Will there be a music video for “Hotel” or any sort of visual? If so, what can you tease about it?

Yeah, for sure! You’ll see a music video in the next few weeks. We shot it in the studio that Prince made a few of my favorite records of all time, so that was really special.

You have more singles coming out soon! What can you tease about those tracks and the collaborations fans will hear soon?

I spent all of last year making this album across tons of different cities, in the greatest studios ever, with my best friends, favorite writers, musicians, and dream collaborators. The singles feature some of my very favorite artists. The next single is probably my favorite.

And for fans just discovering your music, what do you want them to know about you and your music?

I don’t have too much to say outside of the music. I kind of like to let it speak for itself. Whatever they come up with from the records and the visuals is cool with me.

What else can listeners look forward to in the near or distant future?

The next thing to look out for is a remix really soon. I put out “a song to make out to” with Olivia Holt last year. I just think her voice is so dope, so one night recently, I opened the project on my computer and reimagined the production into this sort of rainforest-scaped dance track. That same night Rich The Kid hopped on there with a crazy verse.
